CV

Thomas Sing was born in 1979, the only child of a working-class family. At the age of 12, during a family vacation, he stumbled upon a cheap copy of de Sade’s Justine. It was the end of his childhood and the beginning of a lifelong quest.

Since then, he has been exploring the cracks in the surface, the fractures in the everyday and the shadows beneath our appearances,  embracing them as something deeply human, as powerful driving forces, and as possibilities for community and communion.

After studying literature, philosophy and psychology, Sing developed his artistic position through various mediums, from photography to oil painting. His work investigates our coping mechanisms, the strategies for staying alive in the push and pull between the need to hold ourselves together and the urge to go beyond our limits. It offers to meet us in the balancing act of poise and disruption with an open invitation to acknowledge each other’s abysses. Wounds become doorways, vulnerability the indispensable condition for intensity and connection.

Thomas Sing lives and works between Germany, Italy and Paris.
He is second chairperson of the artists’s association Die Ecke e.V. (honorary office).
